Setting Goals For Yourself

Goals are the crucial part of any personal development plan.

If you haven’t got a goal to aim for, you could end up anywhere and probably will.

Studies have shown that people with written goals achieve more in life.

There’s something about committing to a goal in writing that brings it more to life and tells your subconscious mind that you’re actually serious this time.

Even better if you go public with your goal – it means that other people can hold you to account as well. So tell anyone who will listen, publish your goal on Facebook, and anything  lse that means you’ve very publicly committed to doing whatever it is you’ve set yourself.

Goals work best if they are detailed.

Sure, you can have an overview (and should write that overview at the top of your personal development plan) but you should then go into detail.

The more detail the better!

The closer your written goal is to being life-like, the better.

That means you need to get down into the real detail!

You should be able to visualise yourself in the actual situation of having achieved your goal.

If you’re not a visual person (and you’ll probably know instinctively whether or not you are) then choose your “modality” – feel what you’d feel or hear what you’d hear.

Experiment to find out what works best for you. The closer you can get your written goal to being able to step into it as though you were part of a movie, the better.

If you’re visual, a picture board works a treat. Print out relevant images and paste them onto a large sheet of paper that’s pinned to a wall close to where you regularly sit.

Use some of the images as a screensaver as well.

Anything and everything to reinforce the goal in your mind!

The more you do this, the more your subconscious will come round to the idea that you’re serious about this goal and it will then work with you to help it come true.

Of course, you’ll also need to take action on your goal.

We’ll talk about that more in another article but your homework for today is to at least make a start on writing down one goal that you’re going to work on.

Aim for at least half a page if possible but at the very least, make a start on it.
